As a preview to this year's festival, we are ecstatic to present a previous HUFF headliner, David Lowery - the man behind Camper Von Beethoven and Cracker - at The Carleton. He'll be backed by a full Halifax All Star Band, just like the old days! David is actually in Nova Scotia with his family on a tourism mission. We just couldn't help talking him into doing a show while he's here. If you missed his sold out show in 2013, for the love of all that's holy, don't miss him this time around! One of the best, most literate songwriters at work today...

Lilly Hiatt, all the way from Nashville, headlines this night with her Halifax All Star band. She may be John Hiatt's daughter but but her songs are her own and her new album, Trinity Lane, is fantastic. The opening songwriters' circle consists of Saturday night headliner Tim Baker from Hey Rosetta!, Friday night headliner Brad Roberts from Crash Test Dummies and Vancouver's Dustin Bentall. As ever, the songwriters' circle alone is well worth the price of admission.

Last year, his daughter's medical emergency kept The Lowest of the Low's Ron Hawkins from playing with Art Bergmann but he's back this year, with a Halifax All Star band to headline this show. Playing just their second gig in 21 years, Halifax Power Pop indie band Cool Blue Halo celebrates the vinyl re-release of their seminal Kangaroo album. They'll also have some new tunes for us. Newfoundland's Fairgale make their rocking Halifax debut.

Montreal's John Jacob Magistery, our own Natalie Lynn band and Toronto's Midnight Vesta team up for a pan-provincial rock show. Every band is different, every band is great. Trust us on this one. Oh, and if you haven't seen Natalie's act in a while, you'll be blown away...

One of the best "regular" All Star Bands in Halifax - The Mellotones - will back up Jarvis Church (Philosopher Kings) for this show and we're excited. When we asked the band who they'd like to guest with them, Jarvis was the first name they came up with. He generously agreed to fly from L.A. to Halifax for this one-off event. It's not like Mr. Church shows up in Halifax on the regular, so you ought to take advantage of this gift horse of a show!

Since The Novaks went on hiatus, front man Mick Davis has been quietly making some of the best rock music we've heard in ages at home in St. John's. We're pretty stoked to give HUFF attendees the chance to hear him with a Halifax All Star Band! Colleen Brown's new Kingston-based project, Major Love is major-ly fantastic too. This is a fantastic double bill, not to be missed!

Here's a show that pretty much sums up what, ideally, HUFF is about! PEI's Dennis Ellsworth (one of the east coast's finest) with his Hfx All Star Band (Joel Plaskett, Charles Austin, Dave Marsh) playing with Dustin Bentall (one of the west coast's finest) and HIS Hfx All Star Band and new-to-us Vancouver songwriter Sadie Campbell. Three absolutely killer artists on the same stage, on the same night, for only $20. You honestly can't beat that with a stick.

What can we say about Steve Poltz that hasn't already been said? Maybe nothing but it's worth repeating that Steve is quite possibly the most entertaining solo performer on the planet. During the past 10 years of performing in Halifax, we've never seen him do the same show twice. We've seen 2 hour shows, three hour shows and five hour shows. We've seen him play until he collapsed in a little pool of sweat from exhaustion. But we mostly see him leaving an audience always standing, screaming for more. You'll laugh, you'll cry and then laugh again. He's THAT good. Cape Breton's Poltz-stalker, Carmen Townsend is coming to Halifax specifically to open Steve's HUFF show. Carmen is a revelation herself and this show is worth twice the price of the ticket!

Tom Wilson is a renaissance man if ever there was one. Known far and wide as the songwriting talent for Junkhouse and LeE HARVeY OsMOND, he's also one third of national treasure Blackie & The Rodeo Kings. As if all that wasn't enough, Tom has just written a book about discovering his native roots, the best-seller, Beautiful Scars. This very special HUFF show is a literary recital, where Tom uses his words and his songs to tell his story. It's a powerful show, as much theater as concert, and one that shouldn't be missed. Opening the night is our own Gabrielle Papillon, a smaller package than Tom but no less powerful.

Tim Crabtree is an endlessly creative guy and this year he brings a Paper Beat Scissors show to HUFF that's been specifically written for a chamber music ensemble (stringed Halifax All Stars, if you will). This is a treat! Also a treat will be opening the acts: Moscow Apartment are two of the buzziest teenage songwriters in Toronto, currently the faves of none other than Leah Fay of July Talk and Tanya Davis is our favourite musician/poet that we never get a chance to see often enough.
