The Halifax Urban Folk Festival kicks off its 15th anniversary with a bang as we present an opening night songwriters' circle featuring Jimmy Rankin, Leeroy Stagger and a special guest to be named shortly, at The Carleton on Monday, September 30th. Show time is 7 PM and tickets, while they last, are $42.50 + HST

Jimmy Rankin is a renowned Canadian songwriter with a long string of hits for The Rankin Family and from his solo albums. He joined the family group as a young teen, and soon became co-lead singer and songwriter of such classics as “North Country,” “You Feel The Same Way Too,” and “Movin’ On.” His name is synonymous with the East Coast sound, and was one of the very first writers to bring it to a national and international audience. His 1994 Juno-winning single “Fare Thee Well Love” has taken on a life of its own having been sung by choirs around the globe and in 2013, voted the #1 East Coast song of all time by CBC listeners across Canada.

As a solo artist, he’s been ruling the charts since his 2001 debut Song Dog, with such hits as “Followed Her Around,” “Here in My Heart,” and “Cool Car.” His overcrowded mantle includes five Juno Awards, seven Canadian Country Music Awards, and a whopping 27 East Coast Music Awards.

It’s said the cells in your body replace themselves every decade or so. After 11 albums, two EPs and 17 years as a singer-songwriter, Leeroy Stagger has been wondering if maybe the soul works the same way. Ten years sober, with two kids, a home in Lethbridge and a world class recording studio to go with it, he’s far removed from the hard-living twenty-something who started on this musical path. As far as Stagger can see, they aren’t even the same person.

Stay tuned - we will announce the 3rd artist in this stacked circle in the coming weeks!

The Halifax Urban Folk Festival's second night features some of the best singers heard anywhere. Cory Tetford with Reeny and sister Haliey Smith perform what promises to be a hugely entertaining songwriters' circle at The Carleton on Tuesday, October 1st. Show time is 7 PM and tickets are $37.50+ HST.

Performing since the age of 3, Cory Tetford has lived a life of music. Born into a musical family, he toured his home province of Newfoundland and Labrador with his 2 brothers and father performing gospel music.

As a side man, Cory toured Canada and the USA with Damhnait Doyle, as well as with "The Man Of A Thousand Songs," Ron Hynes. Recently, Cory has been touring with Alan Doyle of Great Big Sea as his guitar player since 2012.

Cory released a solo record in 1999 that garnered him the Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council Emerging Artist award and the 2000 MIANL Male Artist of the Year Award.

In 2000, Cory formed the Warner recording act Crush with fellow Newfoundlander Paul Lamb. The band toured Canada, and released 2 records, was nominated for a Juno and won 8 ECMAs.

His second solo record, "In the Morning," was released November 24th, 2016, and he also released an EP "Road Songs" on December 23, 2020, as well as a single "A Little Rain" on February 8, 2022. Cory also works out of his studio engineering, producing and mixing records.

Reeny is a powerhouse on the stage and in the studio. A songwriter, musician, and producer, Reeny has captured much attention and high praise from within the music industry and has already amassed a long list of awards and accolades. She was first recognized in 2011 with the Portia White Award for Excellence in Vocal Performance, along with a scholarship from the Nova Scotia Talent Trust for her outstanding musical attributes. Reeny has since received three African Nova Scotia Music Awards for Up and Coming Artist, Rising Star, and Artist of the Year. She has also twice won Music Nova Scotia’s African Canadian Artist of the Year award.

Her sister, Haliey Smith, is following in Reeny's footsteps.

                                                                Lucy MacNeil

The Halifax Urban Folk Festival is proud to present Lucy MacNeil (the female voice of the beloved Barra MacNeils) - as she steps out on her own with a full band - at The Carleton on Wednesday, October 2nd. Show time is 7 PM and tickets are $35 + HST.

For Lucy MacNeil, music has always had a heartbeat and she recalls it as the centre of her childhood home where family, neighbours and visiting musicians were often known to gather — the perfect rhythm of everyone’s feet tapping with the music would lull her to sleep on many nights.

Lucy’s own musical journey officially began when she was 9 years old, but even before that she was step dancing alongside her mother, a well-known local dancer and teacher. Her career with The Barra MacNeils has seen her opening tours for international stars such as Celine Dion, Kenny Rogers and fellow Canadian Rita MacNeil. Yet, with all the many rich and rewarding experiences Lucy’s fondest memory of performing took place in grade 10 at Memorial High School. A contestant in the winter carnival pageant, she put together a performance for the talent portion that drew on all her talents – singing “The legend of the St. Anne’s Reel” playing the fiddle between verses and then ending with a step dance routine. The remarkable effort would lead to her very first standing ovation.

A devoted mother of two talented young girls, Lucy finds time to enjoy life’s simple pleasures, from sharing recipes with her mom, and getting car care advice from her dad, chatting with old friends or dancing to the infectious latin rhythms in her ZUMBA class. Lucy MacNeil looks forward to discovering where music and her extraordinary life will lead her next.
